How to count characters in Microsoft Excel https://charactercounter.com/blog/character-count-in-microsoft-excel/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 06:40:35 +0000 https://charactercounter.com/blog/?p=1477 Read more]]> Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application that lets you store and organize your data in tabular form. Microsoft Excel also comes packed with many great tools and features used by novice to expert level users all over the globe to perform their day-to-day tasks of storing, managing, and analyzing data and presenting it in various graphical forms, facilitating the decision-making process.

Microsoft Excel was first released in 1985 and has held its position as the market leader ever since, with Excel 2021 being the latest version.

While mostly Excel sheets are used to store and analyze numerical data, sometimes we need to analyze non-numerical data as well. One of the first things we want to know about a text is how long is it? How many characters are there? And so on.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Excel does not have a built-in feature to let you know the total number of characters in the sheet. But where there is a will there is a way. We can find out the number of characters in Microsoft Excel exactly like we do everything else in Microsoft Excel i.e. by using a formula!.

Does that sound daunting? Don’t worry, we are here to help. In this article we will provide you a step-by-step guide on how to find out the character count in excel.

Character Count of a Single Cell in Microsoft Excel

Let’s start simple.

You have some text in a cell and you want to know its character count. One cell in Microsoft Excel can contain up to 32,767 characters. So to find out the number of characters in a cell we will use the following formula:

= LEN(text)

LEN is a function in Microsoft Excel used to count the number of characters in a string. A string is a data type used to represent text, non-numerical value, therefore, the function will count letters, numbers, characters, and all spaces.

This function takes one argument. You can copy the text within double quotes (“”) and it will show you the character count of the text.

=LEN(“Character count”)

microsoft excel character count len

To count the number of characters in a text present in another cell you can give the cell number in the argument of this formula and it will show you the number of characters (including spaces) present in the cell.

=LEN(A1)

microsoft excel character count cell

Find the Character Count of a Range of Cells in Excel

So far so good right?

Now what to do if you need to find the character count of a range of cells? A whole column, row, or maybe a whole sheet?

Well, we use a formula for that as well.

We will use LEN in combination with SUMPRODUCT. SUMPRODUCT is a function that is used to add arrays instead of numbers. So LEN of each cell will be an array which SUMPRODUCT will add for us.

=SUMPRODUCT(LEN(range))

To count the number of characters in a text present in a range of cells, we will give cell range in the argument of this formula.

=SUMPRODUCT(LEN(A1:A3))

microsoft excel character count multiple cells range

This gives us the total number of characters which matches the sum of the individual cell’s character count.

microsoft excel character count sum range

Find the Character Count without spaces in MS Excel:

Sometimes we need to know the character count of our text without the spaces. To get this number we will use the SUBSTITUTE function along with the previously used LEN function.

What does the substitute function do?

On its own a substitute function, as its name suggests, replaces a character or string of characters with another in the range selected. The substitute function takes the following four arguments:

=SUBSTITUTE (text to search, search for, replace with, [occurrence number])

Text to search is the cell you want the function to work on. “search for” is the character you want to replace, “replace with” is the character or string you want the previous argument to be replaced with. “Occurrence number” is an optional argument, used to indicate the number of instances to be replaced.

Now how can we use this function in our formula to get character count without spaces?

=LEN(SUBSTITUTE(Cell,” “,””))

This formula will first omit the blank spaces using the substitute function and then count the characters with the LEN function.

=LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2,” “,””))

microsoft excel character count non whitespace substitute

Now to find the number of characters in a range of cells, we will combine the SUMPRODUCT, SUBSTITUTE, and LEN formulas together:

=SUMPRODUCT(LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2:A4,” “,””)))

This formula will remove the blank spaces from each cell in the range, count the number of characters, and then treat each cell in the given range as an array. It will then sum these arrays giving us the total number of characters in the given range.

microsoft excel character count multiple non whitespace substitute

And there you go, now you know how to find the number of characters in excel. Hope you found this article interesting and informational!

Conclusion

Microsoft Excel is a great application that has a lot of options and formulas to give you a character count. If that doesn’t work, or you want another way to count characters feel free to copy and paste your text into the character counter on our home page.

How to count characters in Google Sheets https://charactercounter.com/blog/character-count-in-google-sheets/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 04:24:50 +0000 https://charactercounter.com/blog/?p=1459 Read more]]> In this article you will learn about what Google Sheets is, what it offers to its users, how you can use a specific function that comes with Google Sheets to count the number of characters a section of your data, and alternate uses for this function that allow you to achieve different objectives.

What is Google Sheets?

Google Sheets is a web-based spreadsheet program developed by Google. It allows you store and organize your data – like numbers, dates, names – into an ordered structure based on rows and columns.

If you are working with other people, every change you make on a Google Sheet is automatically and instantly displayed to your teammates. To share a Google Sheet with others you can simply give them the link to the Sheet and they will have access to it (you can choose whether to give them read-only access or if you want them to be able to alter the content of the file). This makes Google Sheets an amazing application for collaborative work.

Google Sheets also provides a wide array of operations and functions to perform with the data stored. One of these functions is called the LEN function. This function will be the focus of our article since it’s the one that allows us to count characters in Google Sheets.

The LEN function

The LEN function allows us to get the length of a string (text). It is a function that only requires one argument.

Considering that our purpose is counting characters in Google Sheets, we can rapidly tell that the LEN function will be vital in our endeavor.

Let’s look at how this function works.

google sheets len function

LEN function and its description in Google Sheets

This function has the following structure:

=LEN(text)

“text” is the string whose characters we need to count. This could be a different cell, or an explicit text. For example:

=LEN(“hello”)

The result of this function will be the number 5.

=LEN(A2)

The result of this function will depend on what is inside the A2 cell in our sheet.

google sheets len function

If our sheet has the word Welcome inside our A2 cell. Then LEN(A2) will be interpreted as LEN(“Welcome”) and the result of the function will be the number 7.

An important factor to keep in mind when using the LEN function is that, when counting, it will consider every single character. This means it will count every letter, number, space, punctuation mark, etc.

Later in this article we will see how we can avoid counting the spaces in our text.

How to count characters using the LEN function.

We’ve already seen that the LEN function counts the characters inside a text. Now we will review how we can use this to count the characters inside a single cell, and then we will see that this same function can be used to count the characters inside multiple cells.

Counting characters in a single cell

As we have already seen when looking at how the LEN function works, we can name the cell whose characters we want to count inside the () and the LEN function will provide us with the correct number.

For example:

google sheets count characters in single cell

If this is our sheet. Then =LEN(B3) will result in the number 5, since the word Count has five characters.

Counting characters in multiple cells

To be able to count the total of characters inside multiple cells, we will need the aid of another function called SUMPRODUCT().

What we will do is define the range of the cells whose characters we need to count, place that range inside our LEN function, and finally wrap SUMPRODUCT around our LEN function.

Here’s what that looks like:

=SUMPRODUCT(LEN(FirstCell:LastCell))

Let’s look at an example:

If our Google Sheet looks like this:

google sheets count characters in single cell

Then the result of =SUMPRODUCT(LEN(C2:C5)) will be the number 41 (remember: spaces also count as characters).

Counting characters without spaces

We already know how to count the characters in a single cell and how to count the characters in a range of cells. But there’s a possible problem: if you, by mistake, have multiple spaces or extra spaces, these will be counted as additional characters.

How can we make sure we are not counting these repeated or extra spaces? By using the TRIM function.

The TRIM function is a function that will take a text and remove any extra or repeated spaces within it.

If we wrap our LEN function around the TRIM function, we will be able to get a count of all the characters in our range without also counting those extra or repeated spaces.

Here’s what that looks like:

=LEN(TRIM(Cell))

And if we want to do this same process but for multiple cells instead of one, then we only need to place this inside a SUMPRODUCT.

Here’s what that looks like:

=SUMPRODUCT(LEN(TRIM(FirstCell:LastCell)))

Let’s look at an example:

If our Sheet looks like this:

google sheets count characters in single cell

Then the result of = SUMPRODUCT(LEN(TRIM(A1:A5))) will be the number 31.

Conclusion

We hope this answered any questions you had about counting characters in Google Sheets. If you need any additional features or have trouble counting the characters in Google Sheets, feel free to copy and paste your text into the character counter on our home page.

How to count specific characters in a string using C++? https://charactercounter.com/blog/count-specific-characters-string-c/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 03:53:10 +0000 https://charactercounter.com/blog/?p=1450 Read more]]> Coding is fun for developers, and it becomes even more thrilling when they find the simplest way to get the job done.

Counting specific characters in a C++ string is a time-consuming task when you do it manually. Well, this article is going to ease your tension by suggesting some of the easiest methods to count specific characters in a C++ string.

Methods To Count Specific Characters In A String Using C++

Interestingly, C++ has various ways to count specific characters in a string. Let’s explore all of them one by one.

Method 1: Using While loop

Here in this method, a while loop is implemented to iterate through all characters of the string and check for the specific character. If the character is found, then increment the counter. The time complexity of this method is O(n), where n is the length of the string.

Method 2: Using For loop

It is similar to the previous method. The only difference is that a For loop is used to iterate through all characters of the string. Plus, it also differentiates between the upper case and lowercase letters. However, the time complexity of this method is also the same as above. It is more readable; that’s why developers use this instead of the While loop.

Method 3: Using Boost Library

It is also a piece of cake because it doesn’t require extra coding. You just need to include the header file and call the function. Moreover, it saves both time and lines of code. For this reason, it is considered the simplest method to solve this problem.

Method 4: Using STL Library

Standard Template Library or STL is a powerful C++ toolkit that comes with an inbuilt function to count characters. Hence, it makes the task extremely simple for coders. However, the inbuilt function is slower than the other methods.

Method 5: Using Bitmasking

It’s the most efficient method to solve this problem. In Bitmasking process, we store the count of all characters using a single integer value. It is also known as the space optimization technique.

Method 6: Using Recursion

It’s an interesting method to count specific characters in a string as it involves a function that calls itself. As a result, the task becomes more fun for coders. But, the time complexity of this method is O(2^n).

What Are Some Applications Where This Might Be Useful?

Besides your’s specific reason, this might be useful in the following cases:

 • When working with big data, it might be useful to use these methods to quickly count a character that occurs to get an idea of the distribution.
 • Another application might be in data compression, where you need to know how many times a character appears in order to compress the data more efficiently.
 • If you are working with a text-based application, such as a text editor or word processor, you might need to use these methods to determine things quickly.

What Potential Problems You Might Encounter When Counting Specific Characters In A String?

Coding is exciting, but there might be some potential problems while counting specific characters in a string. First, if the string is too long, it might take a lot of time to count all the characters. Second, if the string is in a different language, it might be difficult to count the characters accurately. Another issue you may face is if the string contains a lot of punctuation, it might be difficult to count all the characters error-free.

Tips To Consider While Counting Specific Characters In A String In C++

1) Make sure to include the string header file while counting specific characters in a string.

2) If you are using cin to take input from the user, don’t forget to use cin.ignore() after cin>>s;.

3) If you want to count upper case and lower case letters, use the isupper() and islower() function.

4) Use getline() instead of cin>>s if the string contains spaces.

5) Use a break statement inside the loop to exit as soon as the required character is found.

6) If you want to store the count of all characters, use an array of size 26 (for lower case letters) or an array of size 52 (for both upper and lower case letters).

Final Thoughts

Playing around with strings in C++ is always a fascinating task for coders. However, a single error can spoil all the fun.

Unfortunately, most beginners find it challenging when counting specific characters in a string. But nothing to worry about because we tried our best to assist you. You could use any of the methods mentioned above that would definitely help you to count specific characters in a string in C++.

How to Count Characters in SQL https://charactercounter.com/blog/count-characters-in-sql/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 03:47:46 +0000 https://charactercounter.com/blog/?p=1444 Read more]]> In order to count specific characters in SQL, we need to use a special function LEN( string_expression ). This function is supported in SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Synapse Analytics, Analytics Platform System (PDW), Oracle, and MsSQL Server. In MySQL, there is an analog of this function called LENGTH(), and it has the same syntaxis and conditions for usage.

The problem I can run into using the function LENGTH() or any other variations of this function is that this function does not work without a parameter. As a parameter, we can use any one argument, and the argument here will be the name of the column where your characters are located. The type of the character could be CHAR, VARCHAR, INTEGER, DATE, and even ENUM. If we insert two different columns using a comma sign, an error with a wrong parameter occurs.

Step 1. For our test, we will use the following table:

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS test(id INT AUTO_INCREMENT, name VARCHAR(50), last_name VARCHAR (50), PRIMARY KEY (id) );

INSERT INTO test1.test (name, last_name) VALUES (‘Georgi’, ‘Facello’), (‘Bezalel’, ‘Simmel’), (‘Parto’, ‘Bamford’), (‘Chirstian’, ‘Koblick’), (‘Kyoichi’, ‘Maliniak’) ;

— General view of the table: SELECT * FROM test;

idnamelast name
1Georgi Facello
2Bezalel Simmel
3 PartoBamford
4 ChirstianKoblick
5 Kyoichi Maliniak

Step 2. Here we can overview the function itself. The following example results in counting the number characters respectively to the cell our function refers to:

— Syntaxis & example:

2.1

SELECT LENGTH(colum_name) FROM table_name;

SELECT id, name, LENGTH(name) FROM test;

idnameLENGTH(name)
1Georgi 6
2Bezalel 7
3 Parto5
4 Chirstian9
5 Kyoichi7

— 2.2 The same function could be written in another way:

SELECT id, name, OCTET_LENGTH(name) FROM test;

SELECT id, name, CHAR_LENGTH(name) FROM test;

SELECT id, name, CHARACTER_LENGTH(name) FROM test;

— 2.3 Here, we also can find a function that returns the number of bits in the referred cell:

SELECT id, name, BIT_LENGTH(name) FROM test;

idnameBIT LENGTH(name)
1Georgi 48
2Bezalel 56
3 Parto40
4 Chirstian72
5 Kyoichi56

Also, we can use LENGTH() in WHERE statement to find a specific number of characters SELECT colum_name1, colum_name2, … FROM table_name WHERE LENGTH(colum_name) >=/<=/=/!= … ;

SELECT id, name, LENGTH(name) FROM test WHERE LENGTH(name) = 6;

idnameLENGTH(name)

— 2.4 In order to count the number of characters in multiple rows, we can use a CONCAT function:

CONCAT(colum_name1, colum_name2) – Here, we need to insert a couple of columns that we are interested in counting characters.

SELECT LENGTH(CONCAT(colum_name1, colum_name2)) FROM table_name;

SELECT id, CONCAT(name,last_name), LENGTH(CONCAT(name,last_name)) FROM test;

idnameLENGTH(CONCAT(name, last name))

— 2.5 We can count the maximum number of symbols in a column using the ORDER BY statement:

SELECT LENGTH(colum_name) FROM table_name ORDER BY LENGTH(colum_name) DESC(max-min)/ASC(min-max) LIMIT … /without LIMIT;

SELECT id, name, LENGTH(name)

FROM test

ORDER BY LENGTH(name) DESC;

/* without LIMIT

idnameLENGTH(name)

— 2.6 The following example with the LIMIT function represents the result of the search for the row with the lowest number of characters:

*/ SELECT id, name, LENGTH(name) FROM test ORDER BY LENGTH(name) DESC LIMIT 1;

/* with LIMIT

idnameLENGTH(name)
Chirstian9

— 2.7 Also, we can do that with an aggregate function to find MAX/MIN(column_name) among the whole table:

SELECT MAX/MIN(LENGTH(colum_name)) FROM table_name;

SELECT MAX(LENGTH(name)) FROM test;

MAX(LENGTH(name))
9

— 2.8 Using a COUNT statement, we can find the total number of rows in our table:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table_name;

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM test;

COUNT(*)
5

— 2.9 It also could be rewritten with the DISTINCT statement, which selects all unique rows in our column:

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT colum_name) FROM table_name;

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT name) FROM test;

COUNT(DISTINCT(name))
5

— 2.10 If we need to count all words in a row, we need to use the following code. It represents the subtraction of the length of a term by replacing an order of the comments and adding “1”. The REPLACE() function returns all text in substring within a new substring.

–General syntaxis:

SELECT COUNT(LENGTH(column_name) – LENGTH(REPLACE(column_name, ”,”))+1) FROM table_name;

SELECT id, (LENGTH(name) – LENGTH(REPLACE(name, ”,”))+1) FROM test;

idLENGTH(name) – LENGTH(REPLACE(name, ”, “)) + 1)
1

Conclusion

We hope you enjoyed our tutorial about how to count characters using SQL. Remember, if you ever need another way to count characters you are always welcome to copy and paste your text into the character counter on our home page.
