IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter Windows 95 Remote Unattended Install Setup Procedure This procedure will work on most versions of Windows 95. It is recommended by both IBM and MicroSoft to use Windows 95 version 4.00.950B OSR #2. RECOMMENDED READING FROM MICROSOFT'S WEB SITE: - http://www.microsoft.com/kb/ (This is Microsoft's Knowledge Base) - Article ID Q133349 "How to Set Up A Floppy-Disk-Boot Server-Based Installation" - Article ID Q114425 "WFWG 3.11: How to Create a Boot Disk to Load Real-Mode Network" - Microsoft Windows95 Resource Kit (strongly recommended) Before setting up REMOTE UNATTENDED INSTALL, you must have the following items: 1. You MUST have a copy of the Microsoft Windows 95 Resource Kit to help you customize your unique network setup. 2. You MUST have a real-mode connection boot diskette to the distribution server. IBM provides a sample real-mode connection diskette with this package - W95PCCRD.EXE. You must download this file. This diskette also contains the following files in the A:\SAMPLE subdirectory: - a new NETIBMCC.IN_ (this gets renamed to "NETIBMCC.INF" after setup - a new IBMTOK.VX_(this gets renamed to "IBMTOK.VXD" after setup - sample files for MSBATCH.INF ("INSTALL.INF" on this diskette) - LAYOUT.CAB (later to be renamed "LAYOUT.INF") - sample AUTOEXEC.BAT ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following instructions are the procedure for performing Remote Unattended Install of Windows95 from a Windows NT 4.0 server or any other Windows95 workstation to which you can establish a connection. This procedure is intended specifically for use when the IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter is the adapter being used in the target workstation. Additional general information about setting up the server can be found in the Windows95 Resource Kit, Chapter 4 - "Server-Based Setup for Windows 95". The W95PCCRD.EXE file is provided by IBM as an aid to assist you in setting up Remote Unattended Install of Windows95 to a workstation using the IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter. 1. From the network administrator's workstation, log onto the WindowsNT 4.0 Server with at valid user ID and password that provides you with full control to download files from the server (eg, administrator), and create a shared directory (IN THIS CASE IT IS "CABS"). 2. Copy all the files from the Win95 subdirectory on the Windows95 CD to your shared directory on the server (ie. "CABS"). 3. Copy the files in the sample subdirectory of this diskette to the shared subdirectory on your server (ie. "CABS"). IMPORTANT: Before attempting to use this diskette, you will have to modify some of the files on this diskette to customize them for your unique network and server environment. The files that need to be customized as well as the types of customization that need to be done to them, are summarized below: - \sample\install.inf - user name, organization name, domain name, product number, time zone, group name, computer name, etc. - \autoexec.bat - server name and shared directory on server for net use command 4. The boot floppy IBM offers connects to the server with the token-ring Point Enabler (Pointtr.exe) in the config.sys file. You may want to use Card and Socket services depending on your machine type. 5. After connecting to the server, the autoexec.bat on this diskette: a) Maps a drive letter called e: for the shared directory. You will need to edit this to your shared directory if you choose to call it something different than "CABS". b) Formats the hard drive on the workstation. c) Copies the Autoexec.bat from the E:\CABS to C:\ d) Creates a Directory called "C:\SETUP" e) Copies the entire contents of E:\CABS to C:\SETUP f) Displays the message to restart the computer after removing the floppy. 6. After the first boot the new autoexec.bat will contain the following: (This autoexec.bat is one of the files found in the sample subdirectory of this boot diskette created with "W95PCCRD.EXE") ------------------------------------------------------------- if exists C:\Windows\win.com goto end :setup CD setup Setup /IS /IW MSBATCH.INF :end --------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: The MSBATCH.INF is the file referred to in the Windows95 Resource Kit. This is the file you may consider editing if you want to customize you workstation. This is beyond the scope of these instructions. 7. At this point in the installation you will be prompted for your user ID and your password to access your LAN. You may opt to automate this logon process. This involves modifying the MSBATCH.INF which is beyond the scope of these instructions. MODIFICATIONS MADE TO THE FILES IN THE SAMPLE DIRECTORY ON W95PCCRD.EXE DISKETTE LAYOUT.CAB (this gets renamed after setup to layout.inf) ========== 1. For the IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter, add: IBMTOK.VXD=0,,0 ;(don't need file size) NETIBMCC.INF=0,,20165 This completes the installation process.
