FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INTERNATIONAL FEATURES, INC. CLOSES OS/2 PROFESSIONAL. MILLER FREEMAN, INC. ACQUIRES SUBSCRIPTION FILE (San Francisco) February 21, 1996 -- Miller Freeman, Inc. (MFI) and International Features, Inc. (IFI), today announced that OS/2 Professional Magazine, published by IFI, has ceased publication after its February 1996 issue and that MFI has acquired its paid subscriber file for an undisclosed price. OS/2 Professional, published since 1992, was the first mainstream publication for corporate and personal users of IBM's OS/2 microcomputer operating system. The magazine was the winner of the Computer Press Association's "Best New Magazine" award for 1993, and last December shared a Folio: Magazine Circulation/Direct Marketing Gold Award with MFI's OS/2 Magazine. According to the terms of agreement, IFI retains ownership of the title "OS/2 Professional." IFI will also continue to operate OS/2 Express, a direct response, OS/2 software reseller. "We're sorry to be leaving the OS/2 publishing market," said Edwin Black, publisher and editor-in-chief of OS/2 Professional Magazine. "However, closing OS/2 Professional allows us to concentrate on expanding our two successful health-care magazines: the award-winning BioMechanics for health-care professionals, and the newly launched Stride Magazine for health-conscious consumers, as well as other non-computer publications yet to be announced. We feel that Miller Freeman, with its strong base in computer and technology publishing, is ideally suited to continue serving our loyal readers." MFI will fulfill OS/2 Professional's paid subscribers, and some of its qualified free subscribers, with its OS/2 Magazine. Published monthly since 1993, OS/2 Magazine supports professional OS/2 users and information-technology professionals. Recently, MFI combined OS/2 Magazine with another MFI publication, OS/2 Developer. "We're glad to be able to provide OS/2 Professional subscribers with OS/2 Magazine," said Peter Westerman, publisher of OS/2 Magazine. "Our purchase of OS/2 Professional's subscriber file demonstrates MFI's commitment to continued investment in the evolving OS/2 market." OS/2 Magazine's editorial and advertising content will not be affected by these changes. "We'll continue evolving our publication in the direction set with the combination of OS/2 Magazine and OS/2 Developer," said Alan Zeichick, editor-in-chief of OS/2 Magazine. "We're confident that the majority of OS/2 Professional subscribers will enjoy OS/2 Magazine's practical technical features, columns, and product reviews." OS/2 Magazine is published by MFI's Software Development Division, which publishes respected magazines such as Dr. Dobb's Journal, Software Development, Game Developer, and UNIX Review. The Software Development Division also produces the semiannual Software Development Conference, the leading event for the applications-development market. Based in San Francisco, Miller Freeman, Inc. is one of the largest business publishing companies in the United States. It publishes more than 70 magazine titles, including several in the high tech area, and manages more than 80 trade shows and conference events. A wholly owned subsidiary of London-based United News & Media plc, MFI is also the North American arm of United News and Media global magazine and exhibition business, which comprises 203 trade shows and 200 business publications in the U.S., Europe and Asia operating under the Miller Freeman name. -- END OF RELEASE -- Contacts: Peter Westerman, Miller Freeman, Inc., (415) 905-2392 or pwesterman@mfi.com.
