Patch Name: PHCO_14734 Patch Description: s700_800 10.20 NetInstall for ACE June '98, plus year 2000 Creation Date: 98/04/08 Post Date: 98/05/15 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.20 s800: 10.20 Products: N/A Filesets: HPUX-Install.FILE-SERV-HPPA HPUX-Install.BOOT-KRN-700 HPUX-Install.BOOT-SERV-HPPA Automatic Reboot?: No Status: General Superseded Critical: No Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHCO_14734 Symptoms: PHCO_14734: * * This patch supersedes PHCO_13853. It is necessary if: * * 1) You need to support the June 1998 ACE * release on a NetInstall server. This * patch does NOT apply to Ignite-UX and * need not be loaded if using Ignite-UX. * * 2) You want to ensure full year 2000 * compatibility for NetInstall. April 1998 * ACE and previous NetInstall patches will * have problems installing to pre-B and C * series machines AFTER the year 2000. * * Older ACE releases are supported with this patch, * but with the same conditions as patch PHCO_13853. * The same hardware is supported by this patch as * patch PHCO_13853. * PHCO_13853: * * Note: This patch supersedes PHCO_13020, but * upgrading is only necessary to support the April * 1998 10.20 ACE patch release. It will work with * older ACE releases with the following differences: * * . There is no way to disable the loading * of patches after the Core OS is loaded. * * . The additional selector added to the * Cold Install UI (see below) has no effect. * This patch for 10.20 NetInstall will allow network installation of the 9000/778/B180L, 9000/780/C200 (series) and J2240 machines with PCI Graphics, UltraSCSI, and 100 Mbit lan hardware. Newly added is control for optionally loading patches from the B6378AA (Networking Enhancements, ONC+) bundle, for support of the 10.20 April 1998 ACE patch release. After installing this patch on a Cold Install (not Ignite-UX) server, all the Hardware Enablement patches will be automatically loaded during a cold install, if they are present in the source software depot, and the user will be offered the opportunity to select the Networking ACE (B6378AA) software. * Do not install this patch on Ignite-UX servers. * * Get the latest version of Ignite-UX for support * * of ACE April 1998. * PHCO_13020: This patch is needed for 10.20 to allow network installation of the 9000/778/B180L, 9000/780/C200 (series) and J2240 machines with PCI Graphics, UltraSCSI, and 100 Mbit lan hardware. Without this patch, these SPUs will fail to boot on a network Cold Install. PHCO_10751: This patch is needed for 10.20 to allow network installation of the 9000/778/B180L and 9000/780/C200 series machines with PCI Graphics, UltraSCSI, and 100 Mbit lan hardware. Without this patch, these SPUs will fail to boot on a network Cold Install. PHCO_8480: Fixed a defect in the installation of patch PHCO_8014. PHCO_8014: While doing a cold-install, the system may obtain the current date/time from the install filesystem and overwrite the system clock. This usually results in the system clock being set way back. Defect Description: PHCO_14734: This patch can be applied to any 700 or 800 series machine that currently contains the NetInstall network cold install bundle. It adds a post_config_cmd definition which loads patches present in the source software depot. It supports the June 1998 ACE patch release. For year 2000 compatibility, the defect is that cold installs to older pre-B and C class machines, done after the year 1999, will cause a bad time value to be set in the kernel. This will cause file copy failures and SD failures. Differences from PHCO_13853: * Supports June 1998 ACE, specifically the updated patch bundle names. * Allows full year 2000 compatibility for NetInstall by shipping a new version of the instl_adm command. There are no other differences from PHCO_13853. Again, do not install this patch (it is not needed) on an Ignite-UX server. PHCO_13853: This patch can be applied to any 700 or 800 series machine that currently contains the NetInstall network cold install bundle. It adds a post_config_cmd definition which loads patches present in the source software depot, presumably the ACE April 1998 patch set. Items to note: * Do not install this patch on Ignite-UX servers. * * Get the latest version of Ignite-UX for support * * of ACE April 1998. * * The 'config' file is changed from the previous 10.20 version to additionally perform an SD 'match target' swinstall. This extra swinstall will load ANY patches in the source depot that match up with the 10.20 core OS, except for the Networking ACE patches obtained from software bundle B6378AA. The cold install UI contains a "Software Extensions" switch which turns on or off the loading of this bundle. This switch is *always off* by default. This is *different* from the patches this patch supersedes. * Any special information in /usr/lib/sw/hpux.install/config will be overwritten! The old config file is saved unless PATCH_NOSAVE is set. * The new 700INSTALLFS file also has a message added to it that warns against selecting the B6193BA or B6378AA bundles. Previous customizations (if any) to 700INSTALLFS are added to the new file. PHCO_13020: This patch is needed for 10.20 to allow network installation of the 9000/778/B180L, 9000/780/C200 (series) and J2240 machines with PCI Graphics, UltraSCSI, and 100 Mbit lan hardware. Without this patch, these SPUs will fail to boot on a network Cold Install. PHCO_10751: Previous patch, similar, but did not include J2240 support. PHCO_8480: This patch fixes an installation problem that the superseded path PHCO_8014 had. PHCO_8014 would fail to verify that it was applied correctly. It is otherwise identical to PHCO_8014 PHCO_8014: The default action of the HP-UX kernel is to pickup the date/time from the filesystem if it is over 1 year older than the system clock. This happens quite often when booting from an install server or media since the date that the install filesystem was created was when that version of HP-UX was released. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHCO_14734.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHCO_14734.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHCO_14734. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHCO_14734.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHCO_14734.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: None
