Since the arrival of COMMODORE'S
new '1670' modem, one of the biggest
problems with it has been it's
incompatibility with existing BBS
software.

In an attempt to remedy this
situation, a small group of Commodore
users, in Charleston, W. Va.,
conducted extensive research and
testing of the '1670' and Ed Parry's,
'EBBS/64 v3.3', a 'Freeware BBS'.

While the research and testing are
on-going, it is possible to publish
the following findings, which will
allow the modem to be used with
'EBBS/64 v3.3'.

--------------------------------------

DIP SWITCH SETTINGS
-------------------

The 'New 1670' differs form the older
model in that it has 4 DIP switches
insted of 3. Here are the proper
settings for 'EBBS/64 v3.3'.

#1 - UP Enables the auto answer
          function. The modem will
          answer on the 2nd ring.

#2 - DOWN Enables carrier detect on
          pin H-K of the edge
          connector. (It is reported
          that this should not matter
          except for C= PLUS 4
users, but it does work on
          the 64 in this position)

#3 - UP Disables the speed indicate
signal to pin J. This allows
          the software to detect the
          caller's baud rate.

#4 - DOWN Sets DTR (Data Terminal
          Ready) to the grounded
          position.

'64 CONFIG' SETTINGS
--------------------

When setting up 'EBBS/64 v3.3' it is
necessary to load, run, edit, and
write the file called 'Config 64'.
While editing this file, the following
changes should be made to allow the
BBS to work with the 1670.

 Line Variable Setting
 ---- -------- -------
 1080 mt 4
 1160 ri 0
 1160 ca 0
 1160 aa 1
 1160 ok 32
 1160 ms 0

'AT' COMMANDS
-------------

The 'new' 1670 uses the standard
HAYES command set. The older
version used a 'non-standard' set.
The result was that most BBS's issue
only a '+++' to hang up the modem.
This created a problem with older
versions of EBBS. But in EBBS/64 v3.3
that can be taken care of. The
following command, in the 'c/v3.3'
file is incorrect 'ATH1' this is the
command to take the modem off-hook.
'ATH1' will need to be changed to
'ATH0', this will hang up the modem
after the caller has logged off.
This can be easily done with a
track and sector editor. The command
appears in the 'c/v3.3' file. You
may have a version with this already
accomplished. Run the program, when
you log off, you will see the command
appear on the screen and you will
be able to tell if it's correct. If
it's not change it. If it is, your
set.

Each time the 1670 is booted up, go
on-line, in local SysOp mode, go to
Chat, then enter the following 'AT'
commands, each on a blank line.

ATQ1- This quiets the modem's response
      codes and allows for fewer
      'connect baud rate problems'.
It is advisable to test this
      with your modem. Different
      responses were noted with
      different modems, so you may
not be able to do this.

ATM0- This will turn off the modem's
speaker so you won't get the
      'screeching' sound everytime
a call comes in. (Not mandatory,
but a big help in the middle
      of the night.)

OTHER PROGRAM BUGS
------------------

It has been reported that a few more
'minor' bugs may exist in 'EBBS/64
v3.3', but discussion of these, if
any, is beyond the scope of this
article.

--------------------------------------

I hope that this has been a help to
you in getting your NEW 1670 BBS
up and running. Remember, this file
is not a replacement for the 'Doc's'
for 'EBBS/64 v3.3' or the COMMODORE
1670's users manual, this is only
an attempt to answer some of the
questions that have been raised about
the NEW 1670 Modem.
