First, copy the correct self-extracting flash file (it will have an .exe extension) from the diskette to your local machine, then execute that file to extract the raw hex flash image. If you are flashing from a Non-DOS machine, such as Unix or Mac, you will need to use a DOS/Windows machine to extract the files from the diskette first, or you can download the file from our FTP site or BBS. Next, follow the instructions in the manual, using the addendum if necessary, install the fastport device on the network as you normally would. Verify you can print a normal text file from your client machine, then print the flash file one of the methods described below. The list below describes many procedures depending on the computer type and the Network Protocols involved; you only need to perform any _one_ of these procedures to successfully flash upgrade your unit. Do not attempt to print the flash image from a word-processing application from within Windows. The flash upgrade will fail because the printer driver will corrupt the image. _IF_YOU'RE_USING_A_DOS_MACHINE___________________________________ Netware/IPX: -If an lpt port is already directed to a Fastport queue, simply copy the file to that lpt port. -Otherwise, use the nprint command to print the file to a queue that is being serviced by the Fastport. For Example... nprint 31fp6019.hex /s= q= /nob TCP/IP: -Use the lpr/lpd program that came with your 3rd party tcp/ip stack to print the flash image to the configured Fastport. For Example ... lpr -S -Praw note: Some applications require you to type in the filename LAST, some require it FIRST -Use your tftp application to open a session with the Fastport, then 'put' the flash image. After opening the tftp session , send the 'bin'command to enable binary transfers _IF_YOU'RE_USING_Windows_3.1, Windows Workgroups, Win 95 or Win NT___ Netware/IPX: -Open DOS prompt, and use examples described above. TCP/IP: -Windows NT support DOS command line lpr printing. Some other third party applications support command line lpr also. See above for an example. -If you have a 'drag and drop' tftp or lpr/lpd application, open a session with the Fastport providing the ip address, and printername (raw) then drag the flash image over to the Fastport. -Windows 3.1, Workgroups, and 95 users who have installed the tcp/ip protocol from Microsoft, or from a third party vender (winsock is a tcp/ip protocol) can also use Digi's Digi-LPR program distributed with Version 6.0 Fastports to flash upgrade units. Refer to addendum documentation for Digi-LPR installation, then simply copy the flash image to the PrintPort described in the Print Manager. For example, if Print Manager displays: Driver xxx on C:\spool\hp_lj3si [idle] Then open a DOS-Prompt, and type the following: copy c:\digi\31fl6019.hex c:\spool\hp_lj3si You may need to exit, then restart Digi-LPR to force it to print this job. NetBEUI: -Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95 users can use their built in NetBEUI stack along with Digi's TSR to flash upgrade units. See Manual or addendum for installation instructions for using the TSR. Copy the flash image to the re-directed lpt port that the TSR is servicing, as described in the tsr's cfg file. For example if the config file contains: lpt1;\\MILAN-\parallel1 Then, open a DOS-Prompt, and type the following: copy c:\digi\31fl6019.hex lpt1: -Windows Workgroups and Windows 95 users can alternately use Digi-Dll to flash upgrade units. Digi-DLL is a replacement for Digi's TSR, and can be downloaded from our FTP or BBS sites for no charge. Refer to Digi-Dll documentation for installation instructions, and verify you can print to the fastport. Copy the flash image to the PrinterPort described in Print Manager. For example, if Print Manager displays: Driver xxx on C:\spool\hp_lj3si\1 [idle] Then open a DOS-Prompt, and type the following: copy c:\digi\31fl6019.hex c:\spool\hp_lj3si\1 _IF_YOU'RE_USING_Apple Mac__________________________________________ Appletalk: -Copy the flash image to your desktop from our ftp/bbs site or by transferring the file from a DOS machine. Open your chooser, click on Laserwriter and choose the fastport you want to upgrade. Run the Laserwriter Utility 7.6.2 shipped on the Digi Mac Diskette. Click 'Utility' then 'Download PostScript File'. Choose the flash file located on your desktop, and the Laserwriter Utility will send that image to the fastport. _IF_YOU'RE_USING_UNIX_________________________________________________ TCP/IP: -Copy the flash image to your UNIX machine, then assign the Fastport with a valid IP address for your network. Using the fpfilter program provided on the UNIX diskettes, send the flash image with this command: fpfilter -P -UNIX users can use their tftp client to open a session with the Fastport, and 'put' the flash image. After opening tftp, send the 'bin' command to enable binary transfers. -Alternately, UNIX users can use their machine's built-in lpr/lpd support to print the flash file. Create a lpr printerqueue as described in the DIGI manual documentation, using the remote printername as 'raw', then simply use your spooler's 'lp' or 'lpr' command to print the flash file. ______How to reach Digi LanConnect for support and service____________ If you have any problems with installation or any other technical matter, Digi Lan Connect has a technical support staff that can be reached between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM Pacific time by phone, or by any of these methods: Phone (408) 744 2751 Fax (408) 744 2771 (or 2790) BBS (408) 744 2747 9600,N,8,1 FTP ftp://ftp.milan.com, 206.49.59.2 Web http://www.milan.com Email support@milan.com
