CHAPEL SHOGGOTH by Marc Laidlaw "Do not go down into the Vale," they told me. "You'll come to Chapel Shoggoth and you will not like it there." But that was exactly the sort of place I like: haunted, full of secrets, and although I hardly am immune to fear, I gravitate to it.... CHAPEL SHOGGOTH (shoggoth.bsp) A single player map by Marc Laidlaw. mlaidlaw@pacbell.net or ml@townsend.com ANAL RETENTIVE SECTION: This map was made in January-February, 1997, on a gasping and panting Pentium 60 using Worldcraft (versions 0.9-1a registered). Approx. 125 hours to build; probably more. (25 min. to QBSP. 1 hr. to Light. 10 hours to VIS.) It's my first finished map. Before this, I only wrote ABOUT Quake: I authored the id feature story in Wired ("The Egos of Id") and "The Book of id" for the id Anthology. SOLO PLAY ANYONE? Chapel Shoggoth is intended for solo play only, but I've included three cooperative starts in case anyone wants to try that. I don't think the map would work for deathmatch, but if you're really desperate to try (unlikely considering all the great maps out there), I'll send you everything you need to do it yourself. I haven't really played deathmatch myself, so far be it from me to tell anyone what makes a good deathmatch map. TEXTURES: All textures are standard id-issue, except for the animated shoggoth stuff, which is my own. Needless to say, none of id's textures can be reproduced for commercial purposes without violating id's copyright. However, the whole gang of mappers and Quakers is free to copy and distribute the map amongst themselves in keeping with the honorable traditions of the 3d-online community. Keep the readme with it; you know the drill. BUGS: If you jump out the windows in the chapel, you're on your own. A surplus of detail in a few spots is causing some vanishing models in the catacombs--but heck, everybody knows there's a monster behind every door! (As for the abyss, with its predictably slow framerates, once all the scrags get out of your face, things pick up a bit.) Everything I learned in making this map is stuff I should have known before I started. And if you think it runs slow on your computer, you should try it on mine! NO SKILL LEVELS: Next time. Maybe. I've been apprised that with the current population of monsters, a 4 year old can get through the map but a 37 year old cannot. INSTALLATION: Copy shoggoth.bsp into your quake/id1/maps directory. From the console, type "map shoggoth". ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Jim Lowell helped me every step of the way. Ben Morris sent me the registered Worldcraft as soon as it was ready (and everybody who's been using it for more than 30 days should pay up!). I had some helpful beta-test feedback from Matt Hooper at IONSTORM! (which I mostly had to ignore). Everything I know about textures I learned from Dan Bickell. And I wouldn't be doing this at all if it weren't for my pals at id Software and IONSTORM!
