The original title, Bitte (pronounced “bitter”) is German for ‘please’ and had nothing to do with anything other than the fact that I had just moved to Germany at the time of its creation. The map started as an attempt to replace the final level of John Romero’s unofficial 5th episode, SIGIL (E5M8 - Halls of Perdition), which I felt was unsatisfying, but it eventually evolved into its own creation. It now stands instead as a tribute and a love letter to the original Doom whilst being heavily influenced by SIGIL as well as other classic John Romero Maps (E4M2 – Perfect Hatred in particular!). The level is somewhat linear but should give the player a fun journey and take about 20 minutes to complete on a perfect run. Otherwise prepare for about an hour of punishment for the average player on a blind run (pistol start, what else?!). This is the third map I ever created (after Septicious [1st] and London Road [2nd] ) and it has had some additional input from Dylan Gill (mapper and speed runner, YouTube - TheV1perK1ller), who did some extra detailing work and changed the title/music/sky textures etc. since I was still new to mapping at that point, had limited tools at my disposal and absolutely no clue what I was doing. As a result, there are no clever mapping techniques here. It is totally vanilla without any modifications whatsoever – the challenge of working only with the limitations of the original game were both painful and rewarding. I recommend playing Back to Heck through GZDoom (not essential though) as I am aware that other Source Ports do not give the player exactly the right experience. The map is finished but may receive some more attention in the future. No Jumping – it is not necessary and will only ruin the flow of the level. Mouse look is not prohibited and entirely personal preference. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for playing.
